Birka
was built in Flensburg in 1937 as a freighter for the
company Hamburg Mathis, but was requisitioned by the
German Kriegsmarine in late 1940 and rebuilt as a hospital
ship. She got space for 120 beds and was put in service
5.September 1940. Birka sank after she sailed into a
Russian mine field in the Alta fjord 26.May 1943. Its
estimated that 115 men perished in the sinking. The
official position is north of Sandland, and the wreck has
not officially been found.
