RO-20 Wolsum

The
Dutch freighter Wolsum was built by Vuijk
& Sonen in Ijssel
in Holland, and was launched in 1921. After the German
occupation of Holland in May 1940 she was was
confiscated by the German Kriegsmarine and renamed
RO-20. While at anchor in Kirkenes loaded with
ammunition, she was
bombed by Soviet IL-2 airplanes 16.September 1944. She
was put on fire, and due to her dangerous cargo, she was
towed out of the harbor. Not long after parts of her
cargo ignited and she soon went down in the deep. The
wreck rest today on a depth of approx 70 meter between
Hølen and Reinøya outside Kirkenes city.
