The
steamer Barcelona was built in Rostock in Germany and was
launched in 1921. In second world war she was wudely used
as a cargo freighter and troop transport foro the German
forces. Early in the morning 29.October 1941 a British
reconnaissance plane had passed over Ålesund, and had
spotted several German ships at anchor. It was decided
that they should launch an "Anti-shipping" mission on
these ships that same night. In the evening around 21:15
the air raid alarm rings out in Ålesund city when nine
British Lockheed Hudson planes attack the ships in the
harbor. Barcelona is heavily damaged in the attack and one
civilian and two German antiaircraft soldiers are killed.
The wreck of Barcelona rest today on her port side on a
depth of 42 to 70 meter northwest of Ålesund city and the
harbor.
