The
steamer Beaconsfield was built by Tyne
Iron Shipbuilding Company in Newcastle, and was
launched in 1877. She was delivered the same year, and
sailed for the English company John Wilson based in
Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Under a journey
from Kristiania to Trondheim loaded with coal, she hit
ground outside Bjogna 7.April 1905. She later slid off the
bank and sank with her masts above water at Sjurstarene.
The wreck was inspected by
the Norwegian salvage vessel Stærkodder who sent down a
diver, but the wreck was soon abandoned. She
was forgotten until the Norwegian photographer Nils Aukan
located the wreck in the 1980`s on a depth of 24 to 32
meter.
