The
steamer Jacarta was built in Bremen in Germany, and was
launched in 1914. For the next
fifteen years she sailed the waters in both the Atlantic
and Pacific oceans before she was laid up in Rotterdam.
She was sold in 1936 to the German company Hendrik
Fisser AG in Emden, and a few years later she was
requisitioned by Kriegsmarine and renamed Konsul Carl
Fisser. While
at anchor in Ålesund harbor she was attacked by Allied
Lockheed Hudson airplanes 3.May
1942. She was soon on fire, and the
fire department in Ålesund launched boats but didn't reach
her before several explosions occurred.. An attempt to tow
the wreck to shore later also failed and soon she went
down in the deep. The wreck rest today right outside the
harbor on a depth of 25 to 55 meter.
