Georg Thiele - Z 2


The German Kriegsmarine destroyer George Thiele Z was part of Kriegsschiffgruppe 1 under the invasion of Norway in April 1940. Assigned to secure Narvik and the iron ore transport from Sweden, the group arrived the entrance to Narvik in the morning 9.April 1940.George Thiele was commanded by Korvettenkapitän Max Ecart Wolff and he had a crew of 323 men. She and the nine other destroyers were heavily engaged in the battles of Narvik the following days, and she was eventually forced to be beached and scuttled by her own crew in Sildvik 13.April. The battered remains of her rest today in the Rombakfjord outside Narvik, her bow still visible on the surface.
