1940 Skjerstad arrives in Bodø to receive new orders. The
new orders consists of sailing British soldiers to Rognan
and put them ashore there. After successfully delivering
them she is laid up at anchor close to shore 22.May and
the crew prepare for supper. Suddenly three German Junker
JU 87 Stukas from I/StG 1 arrives:
The crew has spotted them and manage to abandon ship
before the attack. Miraculously none of the bombs hit and
theplanes returns without doing any harm. Same
evening another six JU 87 appears on the sky and attacks,
again without doing any harm. Last wave of planes comes at
mignight when German
He 111 planes from II/ KG 26 attacks. Skjerstad goes down
three hours later. The wreck rest today in two parts
on a depth of 5 to 20 meter, approx forty meter from shore
at the floating pier on the south side of the harbor.
