Achilles

The
steamer Achilles was laid down at Atlas Werke AG in
Bremen, and was launched in 1922 for Neptun Line. She
sailed in freighter routes in Europe until the outbreak of
second world war. In early 1940 Achilles was requisitioned
by the German Kriegsmarine, and did service with
transportation military supplies. 31.December 1944 she
laid at anchor in Flekkefjord harbor with a cargo of
ammunition, when British airplanes from the RAF squadrons
143, 235 and 248 attacked the city and the ships in
harbor. The German steamers Achilles,Palermo and Wally
Faulbaum were sunk. After the war the wrecks of Palermo
and Wally Faulbaum was raised, while Achilles was left
alone. Today the wreck rest on a depth of 10 meter approx
50 meter from shore right outside the main quay in the
harbor.
