During
second world war, the German submarines inflicted heavy
losses on the Allied shipping. As a mean to counter this,
the US started to produce Liberty ships. These big cargo
freighters were built on several places and often
completed in a very short time. Some 3000 Liberty ships
were built during the war. After the war. some continued
their service as freighters, both militarily and as
civilian vessels all around the world. One of them her
days outside Mandal 26.December 1946. Under a journey to
Larvik loaded with soy beans. Am-Mer-Mar hit ground on
Oddskjærene. In the days to follow the cargo was salvaged
but the ship itself wentdown 1.January 1947 under a heavy
southwest gale. The salvage company Stavanger
Skipsopphugging later cut up large parts of the hull. Her
remains rest today on a depth of 12 to 25 meter on the
south end of the island of Sandøy..
