The
tanker Holmengraa was built in 1943, but was never put in
service under Norwegian flag. The Germans had a great need
for tankers during the war, and instantly confiscated her
when she was launched. She was bombed and sunk 28.December
1944 during an Allied air strike tasked with sinking the
German cruiser Köln. They didnt fint the cruiser, but
instead spotted Holmengraa, Nordvard and U 735 which all were sunk.
Holmengraa was hit in the cargo hold while she laid at
anchor, and thirteen people of her crew lost their lives.
The wreck was located by divers in 1994 on a depth of 72
to 80 meter north of Løvøya and Horten. The wreck was
surveyed by SFT in 1996 and 2000.
