Jonia

The steamer Jonia served under the German 1.Seetranportstaffel and was charted to supply the Wehrmacht`s invasion of Norway in April 1940. The transport division consisted of the vessels Jonia, Antares, Itauri, Muansa and Neidenfels. Her destination was Oslo with war material for the 307. Infantry division and 234.Artillery division. She also carried approx 100 men from the artillery division, while the crew from the infantry division were on board the heavy cruiser Bl├╝cher. The cargo included horses, saddles, wagons, field cannons, ammunition, motorbikes and other military equipment. 11.April she steamed towards Svenner lighthouse when she was sunk by a torpedo from the British submarine HMS Triad. The wreck was found by Gudmund Olsen in 1987 on a depth of approximately 40 to 70 meter one nautical mile west of Svenner lighthouse.
