Mercantil Marica

The
Brazilian bulk carrier Mercantil Marica hit ground at
Storsvalene southwest of Ytre Sula after engine problems
21.October 1989. She started drifting out of control and
hit ground soon after. The accident triggered a local
catastrophe since over 350 tons of oil leaked out into the
sea. The pollution risk were in large parts avoided, and
later she broke in two parts and went down on the deep.
Today the wreck of her is totally broken down due to the
exposed position, and the twisted remains of her rest on a
depth of approximately 25 to 30 meter.
