HMS
Hermes was launched in September 1919 and was put in
service in 1924 for the Royal Navy. She did service in
most British fleets until the outbreak of world war two.
From 1939 to 1941 she did service in both the Atlantic and
the Mediterranean, before she was sent to the Persian Gulf
and the Indian Ocean. In early 1942 she was transferred to
Eastern Fleet on Ceylon. Under a voyage to Tricomalee 9.April
1942, she was spotted by a Japanese airplane and
later that day she and HMS Vampire was attacked by a total
of 91 Japanese airplanes. Hermes soon went down in the
deep with a loss of 307 men from the crew. The wreck rest
today on a depth of approximately 44 to 58 meter,
approximately eight kilometers outside Batticalao. Also
