Nippo Maru

Ningpo
was
built in Gothenbug in Sweden, and was launched in 1937 for
the company Svenska Ostasiatiska kompaniet AB and
put in service in the sugar transport between USA and Asia
. She was scuttled in Hong Kong 11.December 1941 to
prevent her from falling into enemy hand, but was raised
by the Japanese in 1942 and put in service for the
military and renamed Nippo Maru. 29.June 1944 she was
torpedoed by the American submarine USS Flasher. Some
historical sources say she was bombed and sunk under
Operation Hailstone in 1944. No matter the reason, the
wreck was discovered and filmed by Jaques Cousteau's
expedition in 1969. The wreck rest today on a depth of 24
to 45 meter in Chuuk Lagoon.
