Nippo Maru


Ningpo as she originally was named, was built in Gothenbug in 1937 and put in service in the sugar transport between USA and Asia for the company Svenska Ostasiatiska kompaniet AB. Before the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong in 1941, she was sunk 11.December 1941 to prevent her from falling into enemy hands. She was raised by the Japanese in 1942 and put in service for the military under the name Nippo Maru. 29.June 1944 she was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Flasher. Other say the ship was bombed under Operation Hailstone in 1944. No matter the reason, the wreck was discovered and filmed by Jaques Cousteaus expedition in 1969 on a depth of 24 to 45 meter in Truk Lagoon.
