Olympia Maru


Olympia Maru was a cargo steamer laid down by Mitsubishi Zosen K.K in Kobe, and was launched in 1927 for Mitsubishi Shoji Kaisha. She was requisitioned as a military transport by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 194. While laying at anchoroutside Sangat Island in a convoy with eleven other ships, she was spotted and attacked by American Helldiver and Hellcat airplanes from US Task Force 38 in the morning 24. September 1944. Her engines were disabled and she was put on fire, and she disappeared in the deep about an hour later. Nineteen men of her crew died in the attack and the sinking. The wreck rest today on her keel with a slight listing towards her port side on a depth of 21 to 32 meter southwest of Sangat Island.
