AHS Centaur

Queensland

Centaur was a steamer laid down in Greenock in Scotland in 1923, and was launched the year after as a combined passenger and Refrigerator ship. She did service in the route between Australia and Duch East India. In 1943 she was put in service for 2nd Australian Imperial Force and fitted out as a hospital ship. She was torpedoed by the Japanese uboat I-177 outside Cape Moreton 14. May 1943. She was hit next to one of the fuel tanks and was full ablaze before she sunk three minutes later. 268 men lost their lives, and only 64 survived the sinking. In 2009 the wreck was located some 30 nautical miles east of Moreton Island on a depth of 160 meter.
