The
Empire ships consisted of hundreds of vessels acquired in
different manners, constructed, seized enemy vessels or
bought overseas during Second World War. Empire Gladstone
was a cargo steamer built by Shipbuilding Corporation Ltd
in Sunderland, and was launched in February 1944. She was
completed three months later and entered service for the
British Ministry of War Transport. She survived the war,
but under a journey from Wyalla to Sydney loaded with iron
ore and vehicles she hit ground and shipwrecked at
Haystack Rock outside Merimbula 5. September 1950. Most of
her cargo of vehicles and some inventory was salvaged
before she disappeared in the deep a few days later. The
battered remains of her rest today on the south side of
Haystack Rock on a depth of 10 to 13 meter.
