USS Peary

Northern Territory

USS Peary was a Clemson class destroyer built in Philadelphia in the USA, and was launched in April 1920. She was put in service in the Pacific and the Yangtze River Patrol Force in 1922. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941 she was in the Philippines and was attacked several times before she arrived Darwin in December. 19. February 1942 Darwin was attacked by two waves of Japanese airplanes and Peary was hit by bombs five times. She went down with the loss of 88 men from her crew. One of her guns and other items were raised from the wreck in 1950, and the wreck rest today on a depth of 27 to 30 meter in Darwin harbor near the battered remains of the steam tanker British Motorist.
