HMNZS Waikato

HMNZS Waiakato was laid down at Harland & Wollf in Belfast in Ireland in January 1964 for the New Zealand Navy. She was launched in February the following year, and was together with her sister ship HMNZS Canterbury one of a total of two Leander class frigates built for the New Zealand Navy. She was commissioned in September 1966, modernized and refitted in the late 1980's, and did service for the navy until she was decommissioned in 1998. She was sold for 1 dollar and deliberately scuttled as an artificial reef southeast of Tutakaka 25. November 2000. The wreck rest today resting on her keel with a listing towards port side, on a depth of 8 to 28 meter south of Tutukaka Heads.
