HMS
Baccante was a Leander class frigate built by Vickers
Armstrong in Newcastle in England, and was launched in
February 1968 for the Royal Navy. She served in the
Persian Gulf and Gibraltar before she was handed over
for one dollar to the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1982 and
renamed HMNZS
Wellington. She was stricken from the navy lists in
1999, and rigged down and prepared as an artificial
reef. She was scuttled outside Wellington 13.November
2005, and the broken wreck rest today in three separate
sections on a depth of 15 to 22 meter outside Island Bay
south of Wellington.
