Armenia
was a Adzharia
class passenger liner laid down by Soviet Baltic Works,
and was launched in 1928 to operate in the Black Sea.
After the German invasion in June 1941, Operation
Barbarossa, she was requisitioned by the Soviet navy as a
military transport and hospital ship. After the German
11th Army surrounded Sevastapol in October 1941, Armenia
was tasked with evacuating wounded soldiers and refugees
from the city. Loaded with thousands of people, she left
Sevastapol bound for Yalta 6. November 1941. Outside Yalta
she was spotted and attacked by German Heinkel HE111
bombers from KG 28 the following day. She was hit by one
torpedo who broke her mid ship, and she disappeared in the
deep within a few minutes. Only four people survived the
sinking, and its believed that between 5000 and 7000
people lost their lives. Several attempts to located the
wreck has been done, and in 2020 she was finally located
and filmed on a depth of over 400 meter.
