Christina
was a Government owned ferry operating between Saint Kitts
and Nevis on a daily basis. Under one of her regular trips
1. August 1970 she capsized and sank with more than three
hundred passengers on board. As the story goes, the ferry
was registered to carry 155 passengers but was overloaded
with more than 300. The captain noticed the boat was
taking in water and made an attempt to turn and beach her,
but in the process the small ferry capsized and sank
within a few minutes. 233 people lost their lives in the
accident. The wreck rest today standing on her keel in the
narrows between the two islands on a depth of 15 to 22
meter.
