Monkada was laid down in Zelenodolsk in the Soviet Union in May 1986, and was launched in May 1987 as an anti submarine frigate. She was delivered to Cuba 25.December that same year, but had a very short career in the Cuban navy. Already the year after she stricken from the navy lists and scuttled to create a diving attraction outside Varadero. Some historical sources state it was due to an agreement of re-armament of the Cuban navy. 16. July 1988 she disappeared in the deep and laid herself to rest on a depth of 27 meter near Piedra del Norte outside Varadero.
