Xing Da

Xing Da smuggled illegal immigrants for the Chinese mafia Triad and was in a joint operation between the US Coast Guard, US Marines and US Immigration, stopped outside Bermuda in 1996. The crew was immediately arrested and the ship seized and towed in to St.George. She was deliberately scuttled 15.May 1997 as an artificial reef and dive site. A series of storms has ripped the wreck apart and the remains rest today northwest of Bermuda on a depth of approx 15 to 30 meter.

New York Times, 10.October 1996:
"The estimated 109 aliens were taken off a rusting Chinese cargo ship near Bermuda today and flown on two Coast Guard planes to the American military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, according to State Department officials and the authorities in Bermuda. The passengers had been aboard the 221-foot coastal freighter Xing Da since she left China in June, and were down to their last few pounds of rice and bottles of water, Robert Farmer, the United States Consul General, said at a news conference in Bermuda today. Mr. Farmer said there was evidence that the freighter's 26-man crew included enforcers for the gang smuggling the immigrants, and they were forcing the dehydrated passengers to buy water"
