Breda
was a cargo steamer laid down by Nieuwe Waterweg
Scheepsbouwmaatschappij in Sciedam, and was launched in
1921 for the Dutch company Koninklijke Nederlandsche
Stoomboot Maatschappij. After the German invasion of
Be-Ne-Lux and France in May 1940, she reached England and
was fitted out as an armed merchant ship. While she laid
at anchor outside Lismore loaded with merchant goods and
military supplies waiting for a convoy, she was spotted
and attacked by German Heinkel 111 airplanes 23. December
1940. She was damaged by a few near misses bombs and
developed a leak, and was towed away and laid up in The wreck rest today
