The
Liberty ship Edwin L Drake was laid down at Bethlehem
Shipbuilding Company Ltd in Baltimore, and was launched in
1943 for the U.S government. She was sold in 1954 to
Independent Steamship Company in Detroit and renamed
Phoenix. Three years later she was sold to the
company Atalaya Cia Naviere SA in Liberia, and renamed to
Dori. On a journey from Emden to New Orleans loaded with
steel coils, she developed a leak and had to be beached at
Sao Miguel 16.January 1964, where she later sank. The
battered and worn down wreck rest today on a depth of 10
to 22 meter on the south side of the island Sao Miguel,
barely a five minute ride from Ponta Delgada.
