LST
523 was built in Jeffersonville and launched in December
1943. She was a landig craft that participated in the
Allied invasion of France in June 1944. On her third
tour 19.June 1944 she sailed on a mine outside Normandy
and sank almost immediately. 42 men from 300th
Engineer Combat Battalion and the crew perished. The
remains of her rest on a depth of 25 meter outside Saint-Martin-de-Varreville.
