USS LST 523

USS LST 523 was built in Jeffersonville in USA, and was launched in December 1943 for US Navy. She was a military "landing ship tank" - LST, that participated in the Allied invasion of France, Operation Overlord in June 1944. On her third tour 19. June 1944 carrying solders, she hit a mine outside Normandy and immediately went down in the deep. 42 men from 300th Engineer Combat Battalion and the whole crew lost their lives. The remains of her rest today on a depth of 25 meter outside Saint-Martin-de-Varreville.
