U1 was laid down at Deutche Werke AG in Kiel as a type IIA class uboat and was launched in 1935. She did service as a school boat until the outbreak of world war two. She sank in the North Sea 6. April 1940 after being hit by a mine laid out the day before by British destroyers. The commander Jürgen Deecke and the whole crew of 23 men lost their lives. The wreck was found by divers in 2007 who raised the anti aircraft weapon on board. The wreck of U 1 rest today on a depth of 40 meter in the North Sea, north of Nerschelling
