The steamship Bolzaneto was built by Cantieri Odero Cestri Ponente in Genoa, and was launched in 1918 for the Italian company Societa Ilva di Genoa. She sailed for the same owner until she was sunk in 1943. Under a journey from Aquania to Genoa loaded with cast iron, she was spotted and torpedoed by the British submarine HMS Sportsman under command of Lieutenant Richard  Gatehouse 29. June 1943. She was hit by two torpedoes who broke the ship in two. Eleven men of her crew lost their lives in the sinking. The wreck rest today in two parts with some hundred meters between the the different wreck sections, on a depth of 40 to 55 meter outside Genoa.
