Gioconda
was a car and passenger ferry built by Kynossoura Dockyard
Company in Piraeus in 1979. She changed name to Zakynthos
on a later date, possibly due to change of ownership.
Under one of her regular journeys between the islands of
Greece loaded with fuel tankers and cars, her cargo
shifted and started to leak under rough seas outside
Zakynthos Island 28. December 1989. Several explosions
made her cargo hold starting to flood, and she soon after
developed a listing. She disappeared in the deep a few
hours later, claiming the life of one of her crew members.
The wreck rest today on a depth of 35 to 43 meter outside
Kyllini port.
