RMS
Empress of Ireland
was built at Fairfield Shipbuilding &
Engineering in Scotland and launched January 1906. She
sank in the Saint Lawrence river after a collision with
the Norwegian steamer Storstad 28.May 1914 under on
a voyage from Quebec to Liverpool. After the collision she
sank within 14 minutes and of the 1477 people on board
1012 perished. The wreck of Empress rest today on a depth
of 40 meter outside Rimouski. The wreck site is
permanently marked with a surface buoy to remember the
tragedy.
