RMS
Empress of Ireland
was an ocean liner built at Fairfield Shipbuilding
& Engineering in Scotland, and was launched in January
1906. She sailed for Canadian Pacific Steamships and sank
in the Saint Lawrence River after a collision with
the Norwegian steamer Storstad 28. May 1914 under on a
voyage from Quebec to Liverpool. She disappeared in the
deep in less than fifteen minutes and its believed that
1012 people lost their lives in the accident. The wreck
rest today on a depth of 25 to 40 meter outside the city
of Rimouski. The wreck position is permanently marked with
a surface buoy.
