869 disappeared in the deep outside the coast of New
Jersey in February 1945. The cause for her loss was a
complete mystery, and it was believed that U 869 had been
lost outside Rabat in North Africa. But after divers found
the wreck in September 1991, several
items from the wreck was salvaged, and a name of one of
her crew members was found, as other artifacts that
confirmed her identity. It is believed she was spotted and
sunk by the US Coast guard escort USS Howard D. Crow 11.
February 1945. The wreck rest today on a depth of 73 meter
standing on her keel, about 52 nautical miles outside New
Jersey.
