El
Minya was a Soviet produced T-43 class minesweeper sold to
Egypt in 1955. Egypt bought a total of seven of these
ships as a plan to upgrade and rearm her military forces.
In 1970 the situation again became tense between Egypt and
Israel, and after an Egyptian raid against Israel, the
military airbase at Hurghada was attacked by several
Israeli airplanes 6.February 1970. Minya which laid at
anchor in the harbor, was most likely seen as a puny
threat, but due to her being a navy vessel she was
attacked and sunk. The wreck rest today on a depth of 20
to 32 meter right outside Hurghada Marina.
