TheRoRo
ferry Sangomar was built by Neue Gemersheimer
Schiffswerft with yard number 847 in Germany, and was
launched in March 1990. She was bought by the Senegalese
government and renamed Le Joola. Under a journey from
Ziguinchor to Casamance overloaded with passengers, she
was caught by a storm and capsized 26. September 2002.
She drifted upside-down for approximately twenty hours
before she finally went down on the deep. It's estimated
that 1863 people perished in the accident, making it one
of the worst maritime disasters in peace time. The wreck
rest today upside-down on a depth of approximately 15
meters west of Banjul in Gambia.
