HMS
Ardent was laid down by Yarrow Shipbuilders Limited in
Glasgow, and was launched in May 1975. She was
commissioned in October 1977, and entered service in 6th
Frigate Squadron. After finishing exercises in Norwegian
waters, she sat sail towards Argentinian waters after the
outbreak of the Falkland war in May 1982. While she
participated in Operation Sutton and bombarded the
Argentinian airbase at Goose Green 21.May, she was
attacked by
Argentinian A-4 Skyhawk airplanes. She was heavily damaged
in these attacks, and was forced to set course towards
Port San Carlos. Outside Grantham Sound she was again
attacked by Argentinian airplanes, and order to abandon
ship was given. She burned all night and went down in the
deep 06:30 in the morning. The wreck rest today standing
on her keel on a depth of 20 to 35 meter and is considered
a protected site.
