The
freighter Maria Elisabeth was built by Frank Schiffswerft &
Maschinen in Hamburg in Germany, and was launched in
1953.
While she laid moored up in Antofagasta harbor 13. January
1965, she literally exploded in the morning. She was
loaded with 30.000 liters of butane that caught fire and
claimed the life of eight people and injured another 27.
After heroic efforts from the fire department and harbor
authorities they managed to put her under tow out from the
harbor. Anchored up right outside the harbor she continued
to burn the rest of the day and went down in the deep the
following morning. The battered remains of her rest today
approximately 200 meters outside Baquedano Street in
Antofagasta on a depth of 16 to 22 meter.
