The freighter Maria Elisabeth was built by Frank Schiffswerft & Maschinen in Hamburg and launched in 1953. She literally exploded in the morning while she laid in the harbor of Antofagasta 13.January 1965. She was loaded with 30.000 liters of butane that caught fire and claimed the life of eight people and injured another 27. After heroic efforts they managed to put her under tow out from the harbor where she burned the rest of the day and sank the following morning. The remains of her rest today approx 200 meter outside Baquedano Street in Antofagasta on a depth of 16 to 22 meter.
